Frequently Asked Questions & Field Guide

How many 80-lb bags of concrete do I need for 1 cubic yard?

One 80-lb bag of pre-mixed concrete yields approximately 0.60 cubic feet. Since 1 cubic yard is 27 cubic feet, you need exactly 45 bags of 80-lb concrete (or 60 bags of 60-lb concrete, or 90 bags of 40-lb concrete) per cubic yard.

How many yards of concrete do I need for a 10×10, 12×12, or 20×20 slab at 4 inches thick?

At 4 inches thick (including 10% spillage reserve): a 10×10 ft slab needs 1.36 cubic yards (62 × 80-lb bags); a 12×12 ft slab needs 1.96 cubic yards (88 × 80-lb bags); and a 20×20 ft slab needs 5.43 cubic yards (order 5.5 yards from a ready-mix truck).

At what volume is a ready-mix concrete truck cheaper than mixing bags?

Even when paying a $120–$150 short-load fee for small deliveries, a ready-mix truck becomes cheaper than buying 80-lb bags at around 1.8 to 2.2 cubic yards (80 to 100 bags) — while delivering a monolithic pour with uniform strength.
