Frequently Asked Questions & Field Guide

What is the rule of thumb for calculating asphalt tonnage?

Paving contractors use two identical rules of thumb: (1) Hot-mix asphalt weighs 145 lbs per cubic foot compacted, or (2) 110 lbs per square yard per 1 inch of compacted depth. Always add 5–10% for subgrade irregularities and edges.

How much does loose hot-mix asphalt compact when rolled?

Loose hot-mix asphalt compacts by roughly 20% to 25% under a vibratory roller (about 1/4 inch per inch of thickness). To achieve a finished 3-inch compacted driveway, the paver screed must lay roughly 3.75 inches of loose mix.
