How many tons of asphalt do I need for 1,000 sq ft?
For 1,000 sq ft the calculator gives 13.1 US tons at 2 in compacted thickness and 19.6 tons at 3 in, with the 8% allowance. Without the allowance a 3 in layer takes 18.1 tons.
Enter the size and thickness of your driveway to get the tons of hot-mix asphalt and the material cost at your price per ton. The area shows next to the tons, so you can also multiply it by a contractor's price per square foot and compare the two.
The calculator prices the mix itself: tons of compacted hot-mix surface course at 145 lb per cu ft, multiplied by the price per ton, plus a delivery fee. Defaults are $98 per ton and $85 for delivery, and you can overwrite both with the quote from your plant. An allowance of 8% covers edges and an uneven base.
Example: a 50×20 ft driveway is 1,000 sq ft. At 3 in compacted thickness it needs 19.6 US tons, which is $2,003 in material at the defaults (19.6 tons × $98 plus $85 delivery). At 2 in the same driveway needs 13.1 tons.
The installed price from a paving contractor is higher than the material, because it also covers base preparation, equipment, hauling and labor, and it is normally quoted per square foot or as a lump sum. Use the area shown above as the measurement to compare quotes with each other.
| Driveway | Area | 2 in compacted | 3 in compacted |
|---|---|---|---|
| 30×10 ft | 300 sq ft | 3.9 tons · $469 | 5.9 tons · $661 |
| 50×12 ft | 600 sq ft | 7.8 tons · $852 | 11.7 tons · $1,236 |
| 50×20 ft | 1,000 sq ft | 13.1 tons · $1,364 | 19.6 tons · $2,003 |
| 80×20 ft | 1,600 sq ft | 20.9 tons · $2,131 | 31.3 tons · $3,154 |
| 100×24 ft | 2,400 sq ft | 31.3 tons · $3,154 | 47.0 tons · $4,689 |
For 1,000 sq ft the calculator gives 13.1 US tons at 2 in compacted thickness and 19.6 tons at 3 in, with the 8% allowance. Without the allowance a 3 in layer takes 18.1 tons.
Tons × price per ton + delivery. The tons come from area × thickness × 145 lb per cu ft ÷ 2,000, plus the allowance. For the 50×20 ft example at 3 in that is 19.6 tons × $98 + $85 = $2,003.
The quote includes more than the mix: excavation or base repair, compaction equipment, trucking, paving crew and profit. Compare quotes by dividing each total by the driveway area (1,000 sq ft in the example) so that you compare prices per square foot.
The calculator offers 2 in for an overlay over sound pavement and 3 in for a full driveway on a stone base, the two thicknesses in the table above. Heavier loads such as RV pads call for 4 in, built as binder and surface course.
